The Hongqi S9 Hybrid hypercar will break cover at the 2021 Milan Design Week next month, confirmed Automotive News.
The Chinese brand Hongqi introduced it at Auto Shanghai 2021 and also gave some details of its specifications. From what we know so far, the Hongqi S9 employs a hybrid powertrain generating a monstrous 1,400 horsepower and an all-electric range of around 25 miles.
The automaker says it can hit 60 mph in less than 2.0 seconds and top out at 250 mph or more. The company plans to produce just 99 S9 hypercars each wearing a price tag of around 1.5 million euros ($1.75 million).
Of note, the hypercar comes with the Hongqi brand name, but the company did not manufacture it. This car is a creation of Silk EV from Italy that developed the S9 under the licence of Hongqi parent firm FAW Group.
The S9 will not be the only vehicle Silk-FAW will create. They have plans to produce a number of high-performance, luxurious S series vehicles, all under the banner of Hongqi.
FAW Group has plans to allocate $1.2 billion in the Hongqi S series, which will consist of a range of models including SUVs, sedans etc. We also know that the upcoming S series models will come with fully electric powertrains.
It has also been confirmed that Silk EV will create the S9 and the upcoming S7 at a new R&D factory situated nearby to Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters. Other vehicles they plan to develop in China.
To make the development and launch processes smooth, FAW Group has invested heavily in hiring previous senior staff from big automakers like Ferrari and Lamborghini. We are talking about the big guns like the ex Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa, ex Ferrari engineer Roberto Fedeli, ex McLaren engineer Carlo Della Casa, and ex Lamborghini marketing chief Katia Bassi.
The Hongqi S9 hybrid hypercar will hit the floor of the Milan Design Week on Sept. 4. The car is still under development and Silk EV has a lot to do before they initiate deliveries at the start of 2023.
