Volkswagen’s electric start isn’t bad in the U.S. The company sold more than 6,000 units of the new VW ID.4 electric crossover. While this number is about half the sales of the Mustang Mach E, it is not that regretful for a new electric vehicle. It is now time for the company to boost its electric sales by introducing the VW ID.5 GTX.
The ID.5 is an SUV coupe, and we have a pretty good idea of its exterior since the automaker has already revealed many teasers. The official debut of the pre-production model will happen at the Munich Auto Show in early September.
The VW ID.5 GTX displayed in the teasers boast the garish green and red swirls used as a disguise. However, it doesn’t conceal the sloping roofline, and we can see the design has a great resemblance to the ID.4. The front look appears the same; however, the rear is slightly different, having a smoother, sporty roofline. It is the reason the ID.5 offers less cargo room compared to the ID.4.
The GTX name implies that this model is performance-oriented. It serves the same way for the ID models as the GTI implies for the Golf.
Regarding the powertrain of the VW ID.5 GTX, we know it will feature two electric motors (one on each axle) to power all the wheels and deliver an estimated range of around 309 miles (497 kilometres) calculated on the WLTP cycle. The estimated combined output is about 295 horsepower (220 kilowatts).
It is also important to note that the new ID.5 GTX model comes with a little higher range. We mean the ID.4 GTX delivers 298 miles/480 km per WLTP, so the new GTX model adds 10 more miles to the range while using the same 77-kWh battery pack. However, the company did mention the range figures could differ, as per the chosen model.
Volkswagen has already revealed the ID.4 GTX; however, that is only accessible for European customers. For the American markets, the ID.5 will come boasting a different model moniker. The mechanical details will be the same, though.
It is also possible that U.S. customers get the GTX model. We will be able to know about it once the VW ID.5 GTX debuts next month.
The company also said the production version of the ID.5 GTX coupe SUV would be on sale sometime in 2022. It will be the second GTX model in the brand’s lineup. Both the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX represent the company’s objective to boost its share in the electric car markets of Europe.
