GMC recently unveiled the Hummer EV SUV, a shorter and less powerful version of the Hummer pickup truck, due to hit the roads in 2023 alongside its big brother. The five-seat, open-roof SUV has the same presence as the pickup truck; we mean 35-inch tires, extended fenders, and an optional air suspension allowing the vehicle to lift itself six inches up.
Consider it an electric Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco, but with a bigger footprint and higher price tag.
Arriving on the scene first will be the fully equipped Edition 1 sporting a $105,595 price tag. Once out, it will compete against the upcoming Rivian R1S SUV.
Talking about its size the 2024 Hummer EV SUV though is smaller than its big brother, it is still five inches taller than a Chevy Tahoe. However, it is shorter than most three-row utility vehicles and comes close to the Land Rover Range Rover in length.
That said, it is bigger than its two competitors, the Wrangler EV and the Bronco. It also offers plenty of space for luggage; 82 cubic feet to be exact with the rear seats down. It makes it closer to Tahoe and Suburban with their all seats folded. Customers will also be able to enjoy extra storage under the floor.
All the variants in the Hummer SUV except the entry-level $79,995 model come equipped with four-wheel steering with CrabWalk, the air suspension, and 22-inch wheels using 35-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires. The GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving system, as well as smartphone operations, comes standard.
The most powerful Edition 1 model features a three-motor set up – one on the front and two on the rear axle. The automaker says it will be capable of hitting 96 km/h (60 mph) in 3.5 seconds. It is less powerful than the 1000hp pickup truck due to its shorter wheelbase/smaller battery pack.
The automaker didn’t tell us the exact size of the battery but we know it will have 20 modules compared to the truck’s 24-module battery. Earlier, GM hinted at a 200 kWh battery pack for the SUV and 300 miles of range. The less powerful 625 hp models will deliver 250 miles on a single charge.
The owners will be able to remove the roof panels of this five-seater Hummer SUV and keep them in the front trunk. No issues in removing it though, it is pretty simple. Inside, we find large geometric buttons and knobs together with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch display. A rotary knob allows for CrabWalk and air suspension’s height settings.
Furthermore, the 2024 Hummer EV SUV comes with a new trail mapping system via the myGMC map. It allows motorists to design off-roading adventures keeping in view the charging locations.
The optional Power Station generator can deliver up to 3.0 kW of energy to 120-volt devices like TVs or power tools and can even charge other electric cars at up to 6.0 kW at 240 volts.
While it looks the same as we find in the new Ford F-150’s available 2.4- or 7.2-kW Pro Power Onboard generator, in reality, it is not. The Hummer’s generator is basically not a generator, it is a DC to AC converter. It changes the stored DC power in the battery to lower voltage AC power. Unlike F-150, the devices need to plug into Hummer’s charge port rather than plugging them into separate outlets.
