The second-generation Toyota GR 86 has broken cover almost five months after Subaru unveiled the BRZ rear-wheel-drive sports cars. Both are mechanically and visually similar with subtle changes in design. Compared to the previous generation, the 2022 Toyota GR 86 comes with a range of improvements while retaining the lightweight recipe unharmed.
The weight shedding process starts from the use of aluminum for the roof and fenders. Moreover, the front seats and mufflers are now lighter than before. The engineers have also enhanced the torsional rigidity by 50 percent.
The new 2022 Toyota GR 86 is 4,265 millimeters (167.9 inches) long, 1,775 mm (69.8 in) wide, and 1,310 mm (51.5 in) tall and stands on a wheelbase of 2,575 mm (101.3 in). Thanks to weight shedding processes, the automaker managed to keep the weight around 1,270 kilograms (2,800 pounds).
Toyota has ditched the naturally aspirated 2.0L unit for the bigger 2.4-liter gasoline mill. The new engine in the JDM-86 delivers 232 horsepower (173 kilowatts) at 7,000 rpm and 184 pound-feet (250 Newton-meters) of torque at 3,700 rpm. With this power, the sports car can hit 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, which is good 1.1 seconds quicker than before. Toyota offers the coupe in both six-speed manual and six-speed automatic.
Besides offering more energy, the new 2022 Toyota GR 86 handles better with “smooth, stress-free sensations from low to high rpms.” The coupe now unites with other members of the GR family including the GR Yaris, GR Supra, and the imminent GR Super Sport hypercar.
For better stability and steering response, the engineers have fitted a MacPherson strut on the front and a double-wishbone setup on the back, with each axle boasting 18-inch wheels.
Putting the pictures of the new BRZ and GR 86 side by side, it is hard to differentiate between them. However, there is one obvious difference i.e. the front grille styling. Toyota’s offering appears a bit more aggressive. Apart from that, we see a slight variation in the LED headlights.
The same story continues inside where the 2022 Toyota GR 86 comes with a tad altered seat upholstery. Other than the GR badging inside, the seven-inch digital driver’s display, eight-inch infotainment, the shape of the air vents, seats, switchgear, and pedals are identical to the 2022 BRZ. Even the Toyota’s coupe employs Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology to ensure safety.
The 2022 Toyota GR 86 will hit the Japanese dealership this fall. The deliveries to the U.S. and other parts should start before the end of this year. The pricing details aren’t revealed yet, however, the 2019 model started at AED 94,900 here. Toyota UAE is currently not offering the 86, so we are not sure whether this new model will land here or not.
