Driving in the UAE, you should never try jumping a red light because the fine is steep and penalties are severe. If found guilty of jumping a red light in your passenger vehicle, you will receive Dh1,000 fine along with 12 black points. Furthermore, Police will confiscate your vehicle for 30 days.

The penalties for truck drivers is even higher i.e. a Dh3,000 fine and a one-year suspension of their driving licence.

Please bear in mind, you cannot pay the traffic fine online for a violation that accompanies black points. You have to pay it in person at a police facility in the emirate where you have committed the offence. In the case of jumping a red light, you do get 12 black points, so you cannot pay your fine online. The black points expire after one year automatically. More on black points here.

Although the Police impound a vehicle for 30 days when you jump a red light, you can get it back by paying a specific amount. In Abu Dhabi, the fine is extreme i.e. Dh50,000, while Dubai will release your impounded vehicle for only Dh3,000.
