Abu Dhabi’s new traffic radars are ready to catch motorists who fail to buckle up or use their phones while driving. The radars will become operational on January 1, 2021, and will use advanced technology to detect the violators.
The Vehicular Attention and Safety Tracker (VAST), initiated by Abu Dhabi Police in association with Abu Dhabi Digital Authority (ADDA), targets to minimize road mishaps and improve safety. The Data and Modern Technology experts from ADDA teamed up with the Abu Dhabi Police to create an advanced system that gathers, tracks, analyzes, and processes data through various AI methods.
Abu Dhabi’s new traffic radars will snap high-resolution pictures via AI-powered cameras. The technological system then examines the snaps to spot seat belt and mobile phone breaches.
Those who are caught abusing the law will get an SMS that will ask them to stop the violations and know about their fine.

As per Abu Dhabi Police statistics, over 22,000 drivers received fines for not wearing their seat belts in the first six months of this year. Not wearing the seat belt fetches a fine Dh400 and four black points. Similarly, violating mobile phone usage while driving leads to a Dh800 fine and four black points.
At the start of 2020, Abu Dhabi Police also installed a tailgating smart detection system that catches tailgaters and imposes a Dh400 fine as well as four black points.
