Zoox, a self-governing subsidiary under the US’s tech giant Amazon, has introduced its first completely purposeful electric self-driving vehicle. Named Zoox driverless taxi, it can carry four passengers who face each other with no steering wheel. Amazon acquired the autonomous tech company in June this year.
The 3.63 meters (12 feet) long Zoox autonomous taxi can attain a speed of up 121 kilometers per hour (75 miles per hour). It has bidirectional abilities and four-wheel steering allowing it to alter directions without having to reverse.
The Zoox driverless taxi contains a 133 kWh battery, allowing it to travel for up to 16 hours between charges. It is undoubtedly the biggest pack used for any vehicle in the market.
Besides, the Zoox autonomous robotaxi features 100 safety facilities, not available in mainstream cars. These include an envelope airbag for carriage seating, and an array of cameras, radar, and LIDAR to get a 270-degree field of view.
“Revealing our functioning and driving vehicle is an exciting milestone in our company’s history and marks an important step on our journey towards deploying an autonomous ride-hailing service,” says Aicha Evans, Zoox Chief Executive Officer.
The Zoox driverless taxi is presently being examined in Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Foster City.
