With every big automaker offering some kind of active driver assistance system in their cars, it is time to rate them and pick the best among all. This time the responsibility is taken by Consumer Reports that carried out a study on top autonomous driving systems.

Consumer Reports analyzed all the autonomous driving systems in five classes:

  • Capability and performance
  • Keeping the driver engaged
  • Ease of use
  • Clear when safe to use
  • And unresponsive driver

Unlike their last study conducted in 2018, when they analyzed 4 systems, this time they examined 17 different self-driving systems. The tests were taken at the 327-acre Auto Test Center track between June and September 2020.

Surprisingly, Cadillac’s Super Cruise beat all with an overall score of 57 out of 69. The Tesla Autopilot took the second spot after Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 that received 52 points.

“Even with new systems from many different automakers, Super Cruise still comes out on top due to the infrared camera ensuring the driver’s eyes are looking toward the roadway,” Kelly Funkhouser, Consumer Report’s head of connected and automated vehicle testing, said while revealing the outcome of the survey.

It is worth noting that these self-driving systems are not fully autonomous, meaning they require the driver to take control of the vehicle when needed.
