W has introduced a new crossover that sits below Tiguan for the North American markets. Named Volkswagen Taos, it will make its official debut on October 13. For now, we can only see it in teaser images.

“We’re thrilled to announce the name for the newest member of the Volkswagen family,” says Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President for Product Marketing and Strategy at Volkswagen of America. “It was important to choose a name that really embodied the nature of the car and the town of Taos, New Mexico was a perfect fit. It’s a small city that offers big things—from outdoor adventure to arts and design and great cuisine.”

According to the company, they have created the Volkswagen Taos keeping in mind the North American customers. Earlier rumors were about it having complete resemblance with the Tarek (available in the South American market) and Tharu (available in China). However, the teasers take these two vehicles out of the equation because there are some design changes.

Talking about the Tharu, it comes with two engine options: a 1.4L turbocharged mill yielding 148 horsepower (110 kilowatts) and a 2.0L generating 184 hp (137 kW). Both engines mate to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and spin either front or all the wheels.

The company will apparently develop the new crossover at Puebla factory in Mexico. The sales will start at any time next year. We are not sure if it will be available for the UAE markets, as well.
