The Italian luxury vehicle manufacturer Maserati has unveiled a powerful, technologically advanced sports car named MC20, which is available in two body styles (coupe and convertible) and two powertrains (gasoline and electric).
The gas-powered model carries a new twin-turbocharged, twin combustion 3.0L V6 pumping out 621 horsepower (463 kilowatts) and 538 pound-feet (729 newton-meters) of torque. The power goes to wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission enabling the sports car to hit 100 kilometers per hour speed in only 2.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 323 km/h (201 mph).
The MC20’s “Nettuno” V6 is created by the engineers internally. Unlike any other engine by the automaker, they have used Formula 1–inspired tech, such as an extra combustion event isolated from the central chamber to enhance power. The result is the top-in-segment power-to-weight ratio of 2.3 kilograms per horsepower. The sports car just weighs 1,500 kilograms (3,306 pounds) owing to a lightweight monocoque built.
Talking about the drivetrain, the Maserati MC20 boasts five drive modes namely Wet, GT, Sport, Corsa, and ESC Off that deactivates traction control entirely. As obvious, every mode comes with its own settings for steering, throttle, and the adaptive suspension. The double-wishbone setup with active shock absorbers allows the car to raise or lowers itself according to the selected drive mode.
For the Maserati MC20 electric, the combustion engine is obviously replaced with an electric setup. Although we do not know anything about the battery and charging times, we do know it can do a little better on a straight-line run to 100 km/h with 2.8 seconds time. However, the top speed is a little less at 310 km/h (193 mph). The company quotes it will be able to cover 323 km on a single charge on the European roads. This figure could be different for the American markets.
The designers and engineers at Maserati and Dallara spent 2,000 hours to design and create such a chassis that could spawn three different versions of the MC20. Yes, the same monocoque carbon-fiber tub with minor alterations is employed to create the coupe, electric, and convertible models.
The Maserati MC20 is an absolute stunner. The good looks start from a large Trident emblem incorporated in a plain mesh grille, sharp LED headlights, and go to various creases and pieces that make it more aerodynamic. We can see carbon fiber on the front splitters, roof and side sills, as well as on various parts on to the rear.
The modernized expressions travel toward the rear boasting horizontal LED taillights, dual exhaust tips underneath the license plate, and a big carbon fiber diffuser under that. Moreover, the wheels look extremely sharp. The new Maserati MC20 is accessible in Bianco Audace, Giallo Genio, Rosso Vincente, Blu Infinito, Nero Enigma, and Grigio Mistero.
Of course, the MC20 needed a lot of carbon fiber inside to keep the weight low. Peeking inside, we can find it in the center column, paddle shifters, and driver-focused steering wheel. The seats, dash, and door panels are made from a combination of Alcantara and stitched leather.
For driving convenience and entertainment, it has a 10.3-inch touchscreen display supporting the new Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) along with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
The Maserati MC20 wears a hefty price tag of $210,000 for the US markets with the deliveries starting anytime next year.
