McLaren has introduced yet another speedster closing the year with a bunch of exciting cars including the roofless Elva, the GT, the 600LT Spider, the track-only Senna GTR, and some special-edition cars. The most powerful car in the McLaren Sports Series, the new McLaren 620R is based on the 570S GT4 race car and will be limited to just 350 units.

To make it the most powerful McLaren Sports Series car, the automaker tweaked the famous twin-turbo 3.8L V8 to deliver 611 horsepower and 620 Newton-meters of torque. This is 49 hp and 20 Nm extra compared to the basic 570S. The company updated the ECU and turbocharger management to cut three-tenths of a second from the 0-100 km/h speed.

The new McLaren 620R can reach 100 kph in 2.9 seconds on its way to hit 200 kph in just 8.1 seconds. This is 1.4 seconds quicker than hardcore 570S. The automaker emphasized more on acceleration rather than the top speed, so the latter was dropped to 322 km/h from 328 km/h.

What contributed to this quicker speed isn’t the tweaks in the engine only. The automaker also made it lighter thanks to the knowledge of engineering they used in the 570S GT4 racer. The 620R only weighs 1,282 kilograms (2,826 pounds), which is 31 kg (69 lbs) lighter than the typical 570S.

Those who want ultimate performance can switch the standard Pirelli P Zero R semi-slick tires with a pair of full-slick motorsport-spec tires. These are perfect to get track-like performance thanks to an 8% bigger contact patch compared to the road-legal tires.

The sports car gets an updated aero package for an enhanced downforce of 185 kg at 250 km/h. The brakes are carbon-ceramic with 390-mm discs on the front and 380-mm discs at the rear tires.

Comparing it again to the 570S, we see an updated cabin featuring carbon fiber racing seats with six-point harnesses, door pull straps and carbon-fiber shift paddles. Other salient features inside include a red 12 o’clock sign on the steering wheel, standard McLaren Track Telemetry system and optional roof scoop.

Interested customers can have it in Onyx Black with orange stripes, Silica White with orange stripes, or McLaren Orange with white racing stripes. Those who don’t like any of these can contact MSO to choose any color they want if they can dole out at least $299,000.

The McLaren 620R will hit the assembly lines next month and deliveries may begin in the second half of 2020.
